Revit MEP Model Setup: 7-Point Checklist Before Coordination
Before your MEP model enters coordination, a broken setup costs the whole team hours. Run through these 7 checks first.
The Checklist
- Shared coordinates acquired — model must use the project’s shared coordinate system, not internal origin. Verify with a linked architectural model: grids should overlap exactly.
- Worksets named by discipline and system — e.g.
MEP-HVAC-Supply,MEP-ELE-Cable Tray. NoWorkset1left in the model. - Links are Overlay, not Attachment — attached links get carried into every model that links yours, doubling file size downstream.
- Levels and grids monitored — Copy/Monitor against the architectural model so you get warnings when the architect moves Level 3.
- No in-place families for standard equipment — they break schedules and clash grouping. Replace with loadable families.
- Systems assigned, not just geometry — every duct and pipe should belong to a named system. Unassigned = invisible in system filters and pressure calcs.
- Purge and audit before issue —
Manage → Purge Unusedplus an audit save. Target: model opens in under 2 minutes on a mid-range machine.
Why This Order
Items 1-2 break coordination silently (clashes reported in the wrong place). Items 3-5 break performance and reporting. Items 6-7 are hygiene that compounds weekly.
Rule of thumb: if any item takes more than 30 minutes to fix, it should become a task in your BEP review, not a pre-issue patch.
Common Mistake
Teams skip item 4 (Copy/Monitor) because “the architect never moves levels.” They do — usually the week before a milestone. The warning dialog is your only early alarm.
